Parents Newsletter

Headteacher News :

As I have written many times before, we really appreciate the interest you take in your children’s education and the support you give the staff at our school. One of the ways in which you do this is by attending Parents’ Evening and you should have received a letter about our next Parents’ Evening which will take place in the week after next on Tuesday 23rd March. As usual, this will take place in our Dining Room and we hope that the turnout will be as good as the last Parents’ Evening in November which had the best turnout of the 4 years that I have been at the school. It obviously sends the right messages to our children if they see that all of us are interested in how they are doing so I am delighted that so many of you want to join us for these occasions.

Parents’ Evening is also important as it is not just an opportunity for parents to find out how their children are progressing but is also a good chance for you to ask about what children need to do next to keep improving. This idea of targets and ‘Next Steps’ is something we take very seriously in our school and we think that it is very important that children understand what they are trying to learn in lessons as well as knowing what their personal targets are in their work. Teachers start their lessons with something called a ‘WALT’ which is short for ‘We Are Learning To’ so that it is clear from the outset to everyone in the room that there is a clear purpose to a lesson.

We also see Parents’ Evening as a great opportunity to cover other areas so, as we have done in previous years, Mr Cope and myself will be inviting parents to fill in the annual Parents’ Questionnaire which is one of the things we will look at when we write the School Improvement Plan for 2010/11. It is also important that we give you the opportunity to talk to our catering staff so as you will already be aware, Mrs Carter has very kindly offered to put on free refreshments and will be available to answer any queries about school dinners. Mrs Carter will be accompanied by Mrs Aveyard, our Area Catering Manager, who again works very closely with schools and is here to explain the systems and procedures that Kingswood Caterers have in place as well as to answer any questions that parents may have.

On the subject of parents’ meetings, all Year 2 children were given a letter last week about a separate meeting we have organised about the Key Stage 1 SATs (which all children in the country do while they are in Year 2). This meeting will be on Tuesday 16th March at 9.00 a.m. and we will do our best to explain the SATs process and answer any questions you may want to ask.

What’s happening in School? :

1 We had a lot of fun in the last hour of the day in last week’s ‘World Book Day’ when many of the staff dressed as a character from a children’s book then read the story to a group of children.

2 In recent days we have had a number of accidents at lunchtime related to tube shaped yoghurts. A lot of children find these very difficult to open and when they do it sometimes results in the yoghurt going in all directions! We will be very grateful if parents can think about this when they are putting together a packed lunch and consider using other yoghurts if possible.

What’s happening in School? :

1 We will have a group of 16 Chinese teachers and a representative from Wakefield College visiting us in school on Tuesday. We organised a similar event last year and found that it worked very well and helped our visitors find out more about how schools work in England as well as helping our children learn a little bit more about how people live in China. We are being a bit more ambitious this time as all our visitors will be joining us for a school dinner so it will be interesting to see how this goes. The last group of Chinese teachers were extremely complimentary about both our school and our children so we have a high standard to maintain!

2 Year 6 visited ‘The Deep’ in Hull earlier this week and we had excellent reports about all the children involved in this educational visit. It is always nice to hear that our children have been good representatives of our school and impressed other people.

3 Looking ahead 3 weeks, we next break up on Thursday 11th February, as the following day is an INSET Day for staff only. This date has been on our holiday sheet since last Summer but is a bit different to previous years, which is why we are giving parents a reminder. We will also include another reminder on next week’s newsletter.
